6级对话Learning a foreign language

Lucy: Language is just too difficult for me to learn. I don’t know what they are talking about. What shall I do?

Ann: Oh, what are you listening to, a lecture or something?

Lucy: It is a sample test of PET, which I am going to take next month. I wonder if I can pass and now I am really getting worried.

Ann: What’s the problem actually?

Lucy: You know there are two people talking and I have to understand and answer the questions here. Whenever I meet up with a difficult word, I can’t stop thinking about its Chinese meaning. As a result, I miss all the rest of the dialogue.

Ann: That’s so bad. There will always be unfamiliar words for you. How can you know their meanings?
Lucy: I know. But I often do translation in my mind and it seems that it is the only thing I can do.
Ann: Well, I think it’s time you made some change. You just try forgetting all about translation. Maybe it’ll help.

Lucy: Easier said than done.
